There cannot be many businesses around today that don’t use computers in some way, shape or form. Even if the main tasks are done using other machinery, or the business involves work that is done by hand, computers will still figure in the paperwork stages of many businesses. And if those computers are connected to the internet, there is every chance that they may at some point be exposed to hackers and other potential threats that may be lurking with the intent to ruin or compromise the security of your data.

The extensive use of online forums is making the average web user something similar to the age old “Jack of all trades”.

Your grandfather likely was considered a ‘Jack of all trades’ if for no other reason than he had to know a lot about many things in order to survive.

In my sphere of influence I have an acquaintance whose grandfather was a farmer, railroad engineer, rancher, stagecoach driver and police officer. He had a broad range of skills, but couldn’t really claim any one career as the defining example of his life’s work. Thus the old adage, “Jack of all trades – master of none.”

There is no such thing as 100% response to email marketing – even if you were giving your merchandise away (with free shipping).

You have to understand that not even your most loyal customers are going to fully review every email-marketing item you send.

Those that do read the email from your business may not be at a place where they need your product or service at the tie you send it.

So what is the point in continuing to send email marketing items if there is only a relatively small chance of response?

Last time, I talked about one of the first steps involved in setting up your email newsletter: Getting an Email Newsletter Service. Another commonly-asked question is how to design the newsletter to make it the most effective. This breaks down into several questions and considerations:

Should you send a text only newsletter or design it in HTML? Both options have benefits and issues.

I recommend that most small business use an HTML newsletter because it’s much more effective to use graphics to extend your brand. Also graphics are more memorable and can help you to communicate your business’s message in a way that’s, well, worth the proverbial 1000 words.

When a magazine seeks a startup they conduct research that allows them to see if their vision matches the demographic they are going after. They seek to discover what issues are most relevant to their potential subscriber base. The magazine will also develop the departments, or categories, that will be in the magazine. Then these magazines will seek to identify key advertisers who may have an interest in their magazine and its contents.

Once the first issue is printed and feedback is sent the magazine editor will pay attention to what is actually working compared to what research showed to be true. If alterations are needed the magazine will make those alterations in an effort to make their publication as useful as possible to their readership.
