3D Television – The New Era of 3D Technology
Category: Technology
3D movies and television shows have enjoyed a great deal of popularity in recent years. 3D was first seen in the 1950′s, and since then this film style has enjoyed occasional periods of popularity. As 3d technology improves, and as 3d films become more successful on the big screen, television manufacturers have started considering ways to bring the 3d viewing experience into the living room. 3d televisions are currently being released, providing homeowners with ways to make the movies and shows even more realistic and engaging; further increasing the popularity of this style.
There are two ways that 3d televisions can be enjoyed currently and those are through the use of anaglyphic and polarization 3d glasses. Anaglyphic glasses uses the red/ cyan 3d lenses that turn black and white images 3d because one color is filtered out, allowing the other color to reach the eye and creating a stereoscopic image. Polarization glasses work in essentially the same way but they pick up the polarization that is displayed by one of the two projectors that is running during the show.
Technology
While these methods are established and proven effective, there are some newer ones being implemented. One is alternate-frame sequencing, where the LCD shutter glasses are used and the frames are alternated to create the desired stereoscopic effect. The alternating frames are filtered out and the resulting image is smooth and realistic.
The other strategy, known as autostereoscopic, does not require the view to wear any form of glasses at all. This simply projects the image using parallax barriers or lenticular lenses, allowing the image to seemingly shift as you move into a different perspective or angle. Some people have experienced eye strain with this particular method, but the eye tracking systems on the newest televisions are able to effectively resolve this issue.
Philips, Samsung, and Sony are all manufacturing 3d HDTVs, making this a very appealing time to upgrade your current tv. While the technology that is being used and the 3d programming currently being offered still have a ways to go, there are still some excellent options that can be enjoyed now.
