Category: Computers and TechnologyThe port replicator is considered a savior by many laptop users. Here’s a useful guide to anyone who’s interested in buying one.

A port replicator is a useful computer device containing common computer ports such as parallel, serial, PS/2, and USB and one connector cable that connects to a laptop.
With the replicator, you can connect your laptop’s peripherals to it rather than to the ports on your notebook. It saves you time and effort from removing the many attachments from your computer. Just unplug the replicator from your laptop and you’re good to go. It also minimizes the wear and tear of your laptop’s ports. This device is most suited for people on the go and those who use a laptop as their main computer.
Kinds of port replicators
1. Standard type – This is the basic type and consists of one to two USB ports, an SVGA port, and sockets for the keyboard and mouse. It is also known as is also known as a pass-through replicator.
2. Advanced type - This is the upgraded version of the standard model. It has all the features of a standard model plus a network interface controller (NIC). It is usually integrated with MultiBay for easy access to MultiBay devices.
Where can I buy one?
A number of third-party vendors and online shops sell them at a much cheaper rate compared to the ones that computer makers sell. When looking for brands, it is best to consult with your laptop’s vendors for their recommendation and for information on compatible brands for your unit.
Buying tip
Many devices work with only one or a few specific laptop models, so make sure the device you’re buying works with your unit.
