How To Earn Money On The Web
Category: InternetIf you are like me, when the web started becoming a part of everyday life, I was wondering how to earn money on the web. At first glance it seemed an easy way to make a quick buck. Just get a website and watch the money come rolling in. However, the question of how to earn money on the web turned out to be slightly more complex.
Learning Web Design is a Must!
I learned web design with HotDog (remember that editor!) and got my first site going and waited for the money to start coming in. ….and waited ..and waited. That first site didn’t earn one dime. Nor the next and ditto for several more after that. I decided it was time to step back and take a closer look at the concept of how to earn money on the web.
Upon first inspection, my main problem was the lack of traffic coming to my sites. No visitors meant zero sales. So my first solution for how to earn money on the web was to get traffic to my sites. But how could I get more traffic? Search engines seemed the answer. But I knew nothing about search engine optimization at that time. In fact, I didn’t even know enough about it to be able to get myself pointed in the right direction. This problem led me to the world of affiliate marketing.
I Tried My Hand At Affiliate Marketing
We were purchasing a nutritional product for our older dog when we started investigating selling it ourselves. The manufacturer had a page entitled “How to make money on the web”. I of course was interested! The site had an affiliate program I joined. All I had to do was send people to their site, and if they purchased the product I would receive six dollars for each sale! But the problem was how to get the traffic. I could make a page about the product and put the affiliate link on the page. But I still did not know how I could get traffic to the site. No traffic meant no clicks. I needed a guaranteed way to get traffic! This problem led me to the world of Pay Per Click advertising and hopefully the answer of how to earn money on the web.
The concept is simple. Just sign up with the major search engines and I could have my ads on the first page for any search term I chose. And I only had to pay when someone clicked the ad! I got the ads set up and waited. I got a lot of clicks, but not one sale! Not only had I failed to learn how to earn money on the web, I was now in the hole. The web was making money off of me! But I didn’t give up on this idea. I read as much as I could and saw some major problems with how I was setting up my ads. I tweaked the ads and got my first sale, and my second, and then my third! I had finally learned how to make money on the web! I was thrilled!
Three Steps Forward and Two Steps Back
Things went well for the next six months or so. I was getting monthly checks between two and three-hundred dollars. Pretty good, except I was paying over one-hundred dollars per month for my pay per click advertising! Ok, I was making a profit, but I kept thinking about how much more I could make if I didn’t have to pay for those clicks. I wanted to learn how to make money on the web without “buying” traffic. That meant I had to somehow get my pages listed well in the search engines. This led me to the world of search engine optimization.
I am happy to say I’ve had great success with my search engine optimization efforts! Looking back, my biggest mistake was not digging into this subject from the start. Search engine optimization is not difficult, and anyone with average intelligence and motivation can learn to do it well. Be sure to read my article on search engine rank optimization.
