High-performance Computing On A Shoestring
Category: Computers and TechnologyThe latest computers can cost a small fortune, but here is some information that will enable you to have a powerful system without breaking the bank.
I just love to save money when it comes to computers. It is so gratifying to never have called out a tech guy to fix problems because you can repair them on your own. People I know waste a small fortune on PCs – they get the cutting edge technology as soon as it is released and then not long after it is old hat. In contrast, I only purchase the best value components and keep them perfectly maintained so that it is just as quick other more dear PCs.
With computers, there is a rule of thumb that says that the cost of performance halves every 12-18 months. To me, this translates as if you really want the latest and greatest component just exercise a bit of patience. You will get it before long, and at a huge discount, depending on just how patient you can be. As they say patience is a virtue, and that is certainly true with PCs.
The trick is to couple this rule of thumb with another that computers are faster when they are correctly configured.
The benefit is that:
1. You will save $100s per annum as you are allowing prices fall before purchasing.
2. Your PC is always operating at its best and thus often running quicker than more expensive PCs with higher specifications.
It is an obvious idea that many people don’t ever consider. When you see adverts for the up and coming computers they without fail make a point of just how quick they are. They don’t mention that your current PC is only running at a fraction of its possible speed.
Perhaps there is more cash to be earned by selling a new PC, than tweaking your old one. In the UK the computer store PC World now has a department called the Tech Guys. If you ask me they charge too much money when you bear in mind some of the solutions can be carried out by the typical home user if they only knew the secrets. To make matters worse, there was a story in the Times newspaper that said simple jobs are being misdiagnosed as, leading to more expensive repair work. I have the feeling that they are using the Tech Guys as a way to get people to go for unnecessary new equipment.
