And it's sad that many times we don't know how to fix this. But the fact is that there are many easy ways to speed up our computer, and FREE and effective tools that help us do so. So here are 4 easy ways to keep your computer running fast and smooth, and using some of these goodies:

1) Erase unnecessary files from your hard drive. An easy way to do this is this: Click on Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Cleanup. If several drives are available, you might be prompted to specify which drive you want to clean. Then a dialog box will come up, and we just click on the checkboxes of the files we want to delete. It's recommended that you ALWAYS delete the Temporary Files, and the Temporary Internet Files, as these take a lot of space from your drive.
2) It's essential to have a good antivirus software. Many times, the slowness of our computers is due to viruses or spyware, so be sure you're protected! There are many antivirus or anti-spyware programs out there, but I would recommend tools such as Spybot Search & Destroy, and Ad-Aware, as both of them are 100% free to use. These are NOT antivirus programs, so make sure you get one!
3) Defragment your hard drive. This step right here can improve your speed a lot. There's a free tool available on the internet called MyDefrag, and it's REALLY effective. It's got a very easy to follow tutorial in case you don't know where to start. Google it!
4) Keep your registry clean and optimized. What people don't know is that the majority of the core files of the all the software you have installed is THERE, so it's always working. Every time we use our computers, the registry gets many errors, and things in general that need to be fixed (it SUCKS, but it's true). Therefore, it needs to be cleaned and optimized every once in a while. This particular step requires some knowledge, so if you don't want to screw up your computer, it's a good advice to use a software for this.
